What a first year actually costs

Tuition is rarely the number that decides anything. This is the whole first year, including the costs that usually surface late.

TuitionPer year, as published by the university$4,469
Living costsAccommodation, food, transport — a working estimate$12,500
Student visaGovernment fee, one-off$75
Health insuranceTypically mandatory for international students$150
First year, all in$17,194

Not in the table above: Consular ~€50 + visa-centre service charge. Permesso di soggiorno kit ~€126 due within 8 working days of arrival. CIMEA statement of comparability ~€150 (alternative to the Declaration of Value). Proof of funds ~€783/month. Health: the $150/yr figure is the mandatory private policy at visa stage (~€98/yr); voluntary SSN registration (~€700/yr) is a separate post-arrival option — students using both pay ~$940 in year-one health costs.

Politecnico di Milano publishes this fee as EUR 3,943 a year. The dollar figures above are converted, so treat them as approximate and quote the published amount when you apply.

After you graduate

Graduates of this program are eligible for 12-mo job-search / entrepreneurship permit in Italy. Work rights are set by government policy rather than the university, and they change — check the current rules before you rely on them.

What the headline leaves outGET THE NAME RIGHT — most guidance online does not. The permit for graduates is the permesso di soggiorno per RICERCA LAVORO O IMPRENDITORIALITA DEGLI STUDENTI. The widely quoted 'attesa occupazione' is a different permit, for workers who have LOST a job, and asking for it at the Questura wastes the window. Apply from inside Italy, before your student permit expires — roughly two months before. It runs 12 months and is non-renewable: convert to a work permit within it or leave. The big advantage: since the 2023 Cutro Decree there is NO annual quota on converting a student permit to a work permit, so graduates escape the decreto flussi quota that constrains other applicants.
