What a first year actually costs
Tuition is rarely the number that decides anything. This is the whole first year, including the costs that usually surface late.
| TuitionPer year, as published by the university | $15,302 |
|---|---|
| Living costsAccommodation, food, transport — a working estimate | $12,200 |
| Student visaGovernment fee, one-off | $155 |
| Health insuranceTypically mandatory for international students | $700 |
| First year, all in | $28,357 |
Not in the table above: Consular ~€80 + visa-centre service charge + TIE residence card ~€16 (separate from the consular fee). Proof of funds at 100% of IPREM, about EUR 600/month or EUR 7,200/year. Private health insurance is mandatory throughout BOTH the student stay and the job-search permit, from an insurer authorised in Spain with no co-payments and no waiting periods — basic travel policies are routinely rejected. Budget ~€40–65/month (~$700/yr; $900 was top-end). Work during studies: students enrolled in higher education are automatically authorized to work up to 30h/week — no separate work permit needed — as long as the job is compatible with studies (RD 1155/2024 art. 57). Once working and registered with Social Security, the health-insurance requirement is deemed met.
Charles III University of Madrid publishes this fee as EUR 225 a year. The dollar figures above are converted, so treat them as approximate and quote the published amount when you apply.

After you graduate
Graduates of this program are eligible for 24-month job-search residence for graduates (non-renewable) in Spain. Work rights are set by government policy rather than the university, and they change — check the current rules before you rely on them.
What the headline leaves outThe 24-month permit is for searching only: Barcelona's official international welcome service confirms you may NOT work while the job-search residence is valid — unlike the Netherlands, France or Finland, where you can work during the window. That is a material difference for any student choosing between them. When you find suitable employment you must apply for the corresponding work authorization (DA 17ª.6). Apply electronically 60 days before your student stay expires up to 90 days after finishing, with a Level 6+ (university) qualification, health insurance and sufficient resources; 20-day decision, positive administrative silence.
