TU Wien, Vienna

What a first year actually costs

Tuition is rarely the number that decides anything. This is the whole first year, including the costs that usually surface late.

TuitionPer year, as published by the university$1,647
Living costsAccommodation, food, transport — a working estimate$19,000
Student visaGovernment fee, one-off$1,100
Health insuranceTypically mandatory for international students$1,070
First year, all in$22,817

Not in the table above: Real one-off total ~$1,100: residence permit (~€218) + Visa D entry visa (~€195) + document verification (~€400; required in some countries of application, takes ~4 months) + document legalization (~€80 per document). Consular extras vary by country of application. Proof of funds is EUR 722.58/month if you are under 24, or EUR 1,308.39/month if 24 or over — a meaningful difference for mature applicants. Health insurance is OeGK student self-insurance at EUR 78.84/month once enrolled; pre-departure all-risks cover is commonly needed before ÖGK starts (~€56/mo); travel insurance covers only the gap before you register.

TU Wien publishes this fee as EUR 726 a year. The dollar figures above are converted, so treat them as approximate and quote the published amount when you apply.

After you graduate

Graduates of this program are eligible for 12-mo job-search extension (one-time) in Austria. Work rights are set by government policy rather than the university, and they change — check the current rules before you rely on them.

What the headline leaves outThe twelve months is a ONE-TIME renewal of your student residence permit — you get it once and it cannot be repeated. During it you may work self-employed, or take salaried work with a permit. The real gate is what you must convert to: the Red-White-Red Card, which is POINTS-BASED. Points come from qualification level, work experience, age and German or English language ability, and you need a minimum score plus a job offer meeting a salary threshold. Graduating is not enough on its own. Students may work 10 hours a week during a bachelor's, 20 during a master's.
