What a first year actually costs

Tuition is rarely the number that decides anything. This is the whole first year, including the costs that usually surface late.

TuitionPer year, as published by the university$8,161
Living costsAccommodation, food, transport — a working estimate$9,500
Student visaGovernment fee, one-off$215
Health insuranceTypically mandatory for international students$250
First year, all in$18,126

Not in the table above: Most non-EU students need both a long-stay D-visa (EUR 120) and the study residence permit (EUR 64 in-country, EUR 160 express) — the figure here assumes both at standard processing. Where there is no Estonian mission, applicants travel to a regional mission for biometrics — budget roughly $600–1,000 for the trip. Proof of funds of about EUR 350/month (roughly EUR 4,200/year) is required. IMPORTANT: Estonia does NOT give students state health insurance. You must hold private cover for the entire stay unless you are formally employed 10+ hours a week, in which case the employer registers you with Tervisekassa after a three-month wait. The $250/yr insurance figure is the low end; realistic $300–400.

University of Tartu publishes this fee as EUR 7,200 a year. The dollar figures above are converted, so treat them as approximate and quote the published amount when you apply.

After you graduate

Graduates of this program are eligible for 270-day (9-mo) job-search extension in Estonia. Work rights are set by government policy rather than the university, and they change — check the current rules before you rely on them.

What the headline leaves outUnusually, Estonia's condition works in the student's FAVOUR and is worth telling them about. Graduates holding an Estonian bachelor's, master's or PhD can switch to a work residence permit under special conditions: the employer does NOT have to meet the strict salary requirement that applies to other foreign workers, and does NOT need permission from the Estonian Unemployment Insurance Fund. That removes the salary floor that blocks graduates in Sweden, the Netherlands and Germany. The genuine constraints are procedural: you must apply for the 270-day extension BEFORE your study permit expires, and hold valid Estonian health insurance and a registered address throughout.
